Happy New Year everyone! Hope y’all had a relaxing holiday vacation and are re-energized to start the new year. National Drinking Straw Day is today, January 3rd! Any fellow teachers, parents, or stakeholders love straws? Maybe you have a straw to match each tumbler you have 🙂 . Maybe you have a straw for every holiday or special occasion. I personally enjoy the silly, flexible, bendy straws.
Here are 5 drinking straw activities for your pre-k classroom:
1. Straw Numbers – This can either be a carpet or a small group activity. The teacher will write a number on the board. Students will say the number aloud and then use straws to build that number.
2. Straw Letters – This is similar to the activity above. The teacher can write a letter on the board, or easel (if holding a small group). Students will say the letter aloud and then use straws to build that letter.
3. Straw Shapes – This is the same idea as straw letters and numbers. The teacher will draw a shape on the board. Students will identify it and then build it using straws. To extend this activity, students can count how many sides the shape has, or how many straws they used to build it.
4. Straw Patterns – Students can create patterns using their different colored straws in small group or on the carpet. For example, students can create a green, yellow, blue pattern.
5. Straw Sort – Another idea to practice in small group is sorting the straws into different piles. Students can sort the straws according to size or color.
