Hey y’all! I hope everyone is having a super week. Today is National Dog Day! Do we have any dog lovers out there? I absolutely adore dogs. They are so sweet and the best cuddle buddies. Golden retrievers are my favorite. What kind of dog do you have?
Here are 5 ways to celebrate National Dog Day with your students:
1. BINGO Song – Students will have a blast singing the B-I-N-G-O song. It pairs perfectly with national dog day. Students get to clap their hands and pat their knees in this fun video! The children will also visually see the letters as they’re singing.
2. Clifford the Big Red Dog Read Aloud – Students will fall in love with the big red dog. I love that this story teaches children how to be a good friend! It’s so important at this age to teach friendship skills.
3. Rhyming Pups Game – This is the perfect activity for small group or stations. Depending on their level, students can first practice matching colors together. Students who are more advanced will match the pups by snapping together the beginning letter to the ending two letters, and practice the sounds.
4. Animal Hospital Dramatic Play – The teacher will set up an animal hospital for students, where they can take care of dogs who are sick or injured. Children will practice using stethoscopes, medicine, and bandages to help the pup feel better. Playing is learning!
5. Tennis Ball Sensory – Dogs love tennis balls! Teachers/parents can write letters, numbers, or sight words on tennis balls. Students will find a tennis ball and identify the letter, number, or sight word. Then they’ll repeat it to their partner as well.
Hope everyone has a blessed day! If you have a dog, don’t forget to show them some extra love today. 🙂
