Hello friends! Hope everyone had a great weekend. Today is National Watermelon Day! Are there any watermelon fans out there? I’m a huge watermelon fan, definitely my favorite fruit. I love that it also counts toward my water intake for the day! It’s soooo refreshing.
Here are 5 activities you can do to celebrate Watermelon Day:
1. Down by the Bay Nursery Rhyme – Students will have so much fun singing this popular nursery rhyme. It pairs perfectly with national watermelon day. My students always got a good laugh from this song. Teachers/parents you can also discuss how watermelons are grown.
2. Watermelon Dramatic Play – Children will find the watermelon in their pretend food area. They will tell their partner what color and shape it is. Teachers can also ask them to find any other food that starts with “w”. Students can pick out other fruits that they like as well.
3. Watermelon Toss – Students will play “hot potato” but with a watermelon beach ball. If you don’t have a watermelon beach ball, any green or pink ball will do. Teachers will play music and when the music stops, whoever is holding the watermelon has to answer the teachers question. For example, what sound does watermelon start with? How many syllables are in the word watermelon?
4. The Watermelon Seed Read Aloud – Children will absolutely adore this hilarious book. The crocodile is fearful of swallowing watermelon seeds. The story is so fun. After reading, students who are good listeners can have a watermelon lollipop, jolly rancher, or sour patch kid. * Please be aware of any allergies.
5. Watermelon Counting – Students will count the number of seeds on each watermelon. Then they will find the eraser that matches the number. If you don’t have number erasers, you can use any other manipulatives or cards. Click here to download this free printable!
Have a terrific Tuesday everyone 🙂 !
